Liberals pick candidate for Winnipeg byelection
The by-election for the northeast Winnipeg riding of Elmwood--Transcona has yet to be called but, with the announcement Thursday that teacher Ian MacIntyre will run for the Liberals, all three major parties now have candidates in place. Elmwood--Transcona is getting quite a boundary adjustment for the next general election that makes it much more friendly for Conservatives. But this byelection will be fought on the existing boundaries. I tend to think, then, that the NDP have a much better chance of holding it now than they will in the next general election.
The NDP are the incumbent party in Elmwood. Between Daniel and his dad Bill, a Blaikie has been the MP here for most of the last 35 years. The Conservatives held it from 2011-2015.
McIntyre was last on a ballot in recent provincial election where he ran unsuccessfully for the Manitoba Liberals in the riding of Kildonan-River East. - -DA
