Calgary Signal Hill Conservatives choose their next MP
High drama over the weekend in Calgary Signal Hill, a riding in the city's west side currently held by Ron Liepert. Liepert had announced his attention in the spring of 2023 not to stand in the next general election and so a hotly contested nomination race began. After all, the Conservative -- whoever it is -- that wins the nomination is sure to win in a by-election or a general election. So, on Saturday afternoon, members of the Calgary Signal Hill Conservative EDA gathered to vote and Jeremy Nixon was announced as the winner. Nixon, a former Alberta MLA, announced his win on social media and many, including some UCP cabinet ministers, chimed in with congratulations. But wait .... Nixon, sources say, prevailed in the four-person ranked-ballot contest by one single vote -- with somewhere around 2,200 ballots cast. Given the tight race -- and even though someone in the party had announced Nixon as the winner -- the local EDA race officials called for a recount. That recount was done Sunday afternoon and, after it was over, Nixon was no longer the winner but David McKenzie had won. -- by 7 votes. Liepiert's plan is to serve out the remainder of his term and then McKenzie's name will be on the ballot for the Conservatives in the 45th general election. -DA

The Guardian knows that the secret sauce to building revenue and trust is tied to the amount of time readers spend on stories, and it's using that data to identify a list of stories other readers have found worth reading past the first few paragraphs. As a result, the news organization has added a “Deeply read” headline list to its website, a sibling to its “Most viewed” list.
