Liberals name Mark Carney as Trudeau’s successor
Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has been elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. At a convention that saw crowds in red and white waving Canadian flags in Ottawa on Sunday, Carney was announced as the winner and is set to replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister once he is sworn in.
Trudeau served as Canada’s Prime Minister for over nine years, marked by both triumphs and controversies. Eric Sorensen looks back at his time in office, reflecting on the highs and lows of his leadership.
But who is Carney? David Akin gives us a rundown of the economist’s rich professional background – including his time as the governor of Canada’s central bank and as an aide to former prime minister Boris Johnson as the UK navigated Brexit several years back. And Mercedes Stephenson gives us the low down of what Carney’s victory means for the upcoming federal election.

Why Canada Is Giving Mark Carney a Shot
The former central banker will become the next PM, and many Canadians see him as the best hope in the Trump era.

Poilievre spent much of the 40-minute speech attacking Carney’s connections to the Trudeau government and branding him “globalist and elitist” with questionable financial connections.
Redux, my 2021 Conversation with Mark Carney
TYLER COWEN: You grew up in Northwest Territories and also Alberta, so western Canada. How do you think that’s shaped your perspective on economies? MARK CARNEY: Well, the big thing I took from my time in Alberta is just, I mean, it made me a market believer because I’ll give you an example. I was born just north of what was then known as the tar sands, now known as the oil sands, this huge deposit of oil which was virtually impossible to get out of the ground, economically. It was sitting there literally on the surface, but to separate it from the sand was difficult. Very quickly over the course of as I was growing up, by the time I was an adult, the issue had been cracked. The ability to innovate and make a profit out of an opportunity.

NDP should be 'very concerned' about strategic voting as progressive voters shift to Liberals, say pollsters
Bricker said that one reason for the NDP’s decline in national public opinion polls is the political consequences of its now-defunct supply-and-confidence deal with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s (Papineau, Que.) government. While the agreement enabled the NDP to achieve policy wins, such as dental care and pharmacare, it also tied them to the Liberals.

Tories pick Jim Bélanger as Sudbury East-Manitoulin-Nickel Belt candidate
Sudbury East-Manitoulin--Nickel Belt is a new-for-2025 and the re-draw should favour the NDP over the Liberal incumbent running here, Marc Serré. And yet, my model, based on current pollling averages, has this ever so slightly in the Conservative column: by 0.8% or 317 votes. Serré has run and won in the predecessor riding of Nickel Belt in each election since 2015. And in the riding of Nickel Belt in 2021, the Conservatives finished 2nd and the New Democrat, Andréanne Chenier finished third. But after transposing the results of the 2021 race on to the new riding boundaries of SE-M-NB -- the NDP's Chenier would have finished second to Serré by just 797 votes or 1.5 %. And yet, with weakened (though recently improving) Liberal fortunes, collapsing NDP numbers combined with Conservatives strength -- this riding could turn blue. And you'd have to back to the 1930 election to find a conservative MP representing this part of the province. In that year, R.B. Benett's PCs won what was then Algoma East and Timiskaming South. So a win in this riding by the CPC in 2025 would certainly be one for the ages. -DA

This newsletter is curated by me, David Akin. My full-time job is being the Chief Political Correspondent at Global News but I put this newsletter together every day independently of my employer. Certainly it will include a lot of the work of my Global News colleagues but it will include items from other sources and organizations. This newsletter contains the sort of content I might have passed on via Facebook before it banned Canadian news or on Twitter before Musk.
