Conservatives swipe historical stronghold from Trudeau’s Liberals
Don Stewart, a financial professional, beat Liberal candidate Leslie Church, who got 40.5 per cent of the vote and NDP’s Amrit Parhar, who received 10.9 per cent. Christian Cullis ran for the Greens, getting 2.9 per cent. *I stayed up until 2:30 am (hence the delayed arrival of this morning's Roundup) covering this and when I went to bed, Church -- who had been leading all night had a narrow lead of 300 votes with more than 30% of polls yet to report. Counting took forever because of the three-foot long ballot with 84 candidates on it and, in our system, every ballot in any federal election is counted by hand. Final result came in at about 4:30 am. Deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland had a previously scheduled press conference in Toronto today at 12:30 pm and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a previously scheduled press conference this afternoon in Vancouver. I anticipate some tough questions for both. As of this writing, Pierre Poilievre's office has not advised Parliamentary Press Gallery members of his whereabouts -- but we believe he's still on this Quebec tour. *
