The crowd gathered on the 54th floor of TD Bank Tower, an imposing glass-and-steel edifice in Toronto’s financial district, was a who’s who of the Canadian business elite. Fun fact: Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal and Quebec City are the only cities in Canada which have MPs from three parties. No city has MPs from four parties. In Edmonton, the Liberals have one, the NDP have two and the Conservatives have the rest. (Provincally: It's 100% NDP). At this point in the polls, Liberal Randy Boissonnault will be hard pressed to hold Edmonton Centre while New Democrat Heather McPherson will be hard to dislodge from Strathcona. New Democrat Blake Desjarlais is a slim favourite right now to hold Griesbach.
In Manning, Griesbach's northwest neighbour where the NDP have just named their candidate, the incumbent is Conservative Ziad Aboultaif who, my model says, would win now by 6 or 7 points. But there were plenty of neighbourhoods in Manning in 2021 that went NDP orange, enough to power the NDP to a decent 2nd place finished at about 30 per cent of the vote to Aboultaif's 40 per cent. -DA
