Canada’s Defence Procurement Debacle
Other major countries purchase military equipment without the issues Canada faces. Poland, for example, is undergoing a major force expansion due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They’re currently purchasing systems on short timelines while developing their own defence infrastructure. Canada, a wealthier nation, can’t seem to get its act together. From a just-discovered newsletter authored by a retired Canadian Army veteran. This is a depressing summary but there are recommendations that I hope those who read this newsletter who are in elected office or in government might consider.

Commonwealth Secretary General candidates asked on China
Latika Bourke: The Commonwealth is not a geopolitical organisation but given its unique role in convening two large swathes of the so-called Global South, the Pacific and Africa, where Chinese and US competition is played out daily, I asked Australia’s longest-serving foreign minister and former high commissioner to the UK Alexander Downer whether the Commonwealth had any rebalancing role to play. He said yes, but subtly, and that it would require the leadership of the British, whose elite are too often embarrassed by the Commonwealth and see it as a relic of Empire, in lockstep with the Australians, Canadians and EU member states Cyprus and Malta. China is going to love reading what Latika found out.
