Pickering's O'Connell will not run again

O'Connell's riding disappears in the next election into a new riding called PIckering--Brooklin, a riding that loses much of its northern, more rural part but grows to the east to take in the the community of Brooklin from the riding of Whitby. As a result of the re-draw, the riding becomes a bit more Liberal. O'Connell scored 46.9 per cent of the vote in 2021 versus the second place Conservative at 36.1per cent but after transposing the 2021 results on to Pickering--Brooklin's boundaries, the results are LPC 47.9 per cent and CPC 33.8.
Still, despite the slight advantage the Liberals might have had on a re-draw, the Conservatives will be very much in the game here. Given polling averages six months ago, I would have had this riding as a Conservative pickup in my model. Given the recent shift in polling averages plus the fact the there will be no incumbency advantage for the LIberals, this is a toss-up right now -- though my model has it in the Liberal column with a margin of victory of 0.8 per cent. The Conservatives do not have a nominated candidate here at this point. -DA
