Trump offers Canada no reprieve from 25% tariff threat
With just hours to go, U.S. President Donald Trump is not backing off his threat to slap crippling 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico, and 10 per cent tariffs on China. As Jackson Proskow reports, trump remains unapologetic about his America First strategy. Meanwhile, with U.S. tariffs set to take effect, Canada faces serious economic consequences. However, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is standing firm, vowing that Canada will respond to the trade measures. Mackenzie Gray reports on Canada's next move in the escalating trade dispute.

Elliot Lake man selected as NDP candidate for Algoma-Manitoulin
The Algoma Manitoulin NDP Riding Association has selected David Timeriski of Elliot as their candidate for the riding. David Timeriski is a resident of Northern Ontario, currently living in Elliot Lake. A race to watch as the incumbent here is Michael Mantha, who was the NDP MPP for the riding ever since 2011 when he defeated a long-serving Liberal, Mike Brown. But in the spring of 2023, NDP leader Marit Stiles removed Mantha from caucus for a workplace misconduct issue. Mantha has been sitting as independent ever since and is running as Independent. In 2022, the PCs finished 2nd here with a substantial share of the vote -- 35.5 per cent -- and if Mantha's candidacy splits the NDP vote, the PC candidate, Bill Rosenberg, could win the seat. The PCs have not won here in a while: PC John Lane held the riding from 1971 until his retirement before the 1987 general election.

Trump says there's nothing Canada can do to stop tariffs from taking effect
U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday there is nothing Canada could do to prevent a sweeping 25 per cent tariff from taking effect on Feb. 1. Trump claimed his threat to introduce a tariff on goods from Canada, Mexico and China was not a negotiating tactic but was necessary to boost the U.S. economy. Asked if there was a possible “concession” Canada could make, he said his administration is “not looking for a concession.” “We’ll just see what happens,” he said. Asked about Canadian energy imports, the president suggested he would reduce the tariff on Canadian crude imports to 10 per cent.

John Thune is caught in the crossfire of Trump’s trade war
Thune knows the stakes all too well: Retaliatory tariffs during Trump’s 2018 trade war with China crippled South Dakota’s agriculture-dependent economy — which relies on the billions of dollars worth of soybeans, corn, beef and other agricultural products it exports abroad every year, plus more in manufactured goods. Farmers there are still reeling from their losses, and a standoff with Mexico and Canada — which are now American farmers’ two largest export markets — would be devastating. U.S. agricultural exports to Mexico are expected to reach $29.9 billion this fiscal year and a record-high $29.2 billion to Canada, with China further behind, according to the Agriculture Department.
