Freeland will run to be Liberal leader: ‘Running to fight for Canada’
Former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland has officially thrown her hat in the ring to replace Trudeau as the next Liberal leader. Her dramatic resignation as finance minister set the stage for Trudeau to eventually step down. But Freeland faces an uphill battle to distance herself from some of Trudeau's signature policies, Mackenzie Gray reports on Global National.
Freeland had a matching op-ed Friday on the Toronto Star's Web site but the Star is paywalled -- odd, since I doubt a lot of Liberals in Vancouver, Halifax, or Edmonton pay for a TorStar sub -- so here is the non-paywalled version, albeit en français, in Le Devoir.
Mark Carney's campaign asked to stop using logo by CEO of MetCredit
The CEO of MetCredit, a national collection agency, is asking the campaign of Liberal leader hopeful Mark Carney to stop using a logo that looks uncannily similar to his company’s.

Conservative Lead Narrows to 11 Points
The Liberal Party has seen a remarkable turnaround in its fortunes in recent weeks. Following Chrystia Freeland’s resignation a month ago, the Conservative lead had reached an all-time high of 25 points. In our latest polling, however, that advantage has narrowed to just 11 points, with the Conservatives leading 39 points to 28.

Inside the Conservative Party’s growing alliance with right-wing Hindu groups
Hindu organizations are springing up in Canada, often parroting Conservative talking points about crime, cost of living, and anti-LGBTQ politics. I've never heard of this publisher -- The Breach -- but this is a long piece with some interesting reporting in it so I thought I'd pass it along. If there is a chief deficiency in this piece it is that It fails to even acknowledge that two of the most senior members of Poilievre's inner circle are turban-wearing Sikhs: the co-deputy leader Tim Uppal and the finance critic Jas Hallan. There are, so far as I know, no Hindus in the CPC national caucus. Again: read the piece for yourself but, in my day-to-day work covering the federal Conservative caucus, I do not see any evidence of a "growing alliance" between the CPC and Hindu groups.
VIDEO : "Is life really better in Surrey or Brampton, today? Trudeau didn't even get us flights to Amritsar. Everything is worse than before Justin Trudeau and everything will be better when I'm prime minister" Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre makes his pitch to Sikh Canadians. -DA

A Weakened Iran's New Russia Pact Comes In Shadow Of Distrust
The new partnership agreement [between Iran and Russia] comes with the Islamic republic at one of its weakest points in recent history. Iran’s economy is in shambles, and its so-called “axis of resistance” is significantly weakened -- or even dead, as some would argue.

Universities are mapping where local news outlets are still thriving — and where gaps persist
These mapping and assessment initiatives come as local newspapers increasingly shrink or disappear from communities. Papers have vanished at a clip of roughly two per week, according to a study from Northwestern University’s State of Local News Project. Coupled with broader cuts in funding and staff, the development has led to what researchers call “ghost papers” and “news deserts.”
