Nomination meeting called by NDP for new riding
To ensure the public can meet the next NDP candidate, Andreane Chenier, the Nickel Belt Election Planning Committee is hosting a nomination meeting to make it official. Northern Ontario ridings got all carved up in the latest re-draw and there will be one fewer MP from this vast region. The riding that is getting swallowed into others is the riding now known as Manitoulin--Kapuskasing. Carol Hughes, New Democrat, has held it since 2008 and she will retire when the current Parliament expires. Hughes will speak at this nomination meeting where Chenier will be confirmed as the New Democrat candidate in the new riding of Sudbury East—Manitoulin—Nickel Belt. Chenier ran in 2021 in the old riding of Nickel Belt and finished third, 8 points/4,000+ votes back of winner, Liberal Marc Serré. (Conservatives finished second). But if you take the results of all the polls from 2021 and map them on to the new riding's boundaries, Chenier would have finished a very close second to Serré had this new riding existing in 2021, just 2 points / 797 points back. So, with this new riding becoming much more friendly to the NDP and with current flagging Liberal fortunes, my model has Chenier picking this up for Team Singh by 2 points/1,000 votes if the vote were held this summer.

Russia Spreading Olympic Disinformation, Microsoft Finds
The two main goals of the pro-Russian groups are to tear down the reputation of the International Olympic Committee and make the Games feel unsafe by spreading rumors of violence, Microsoft said. The efforts target France, President Emmanuel Macron, the IOC, and the Games. The IOC is allowing Russian athletes to compete in Paris under a neutral flag, but they cannot actively support the war against Ukraine.
The Least Important Election of a Lifetime
Six months into 2024, it’s become clear that this will not be an enthusiastic political season—for voters or for the media. Television audiences were steeply down for the primaries, part of what Semafor has called the “collapsing US political-media-industrial complex.” President Joe Biden faced no meaningful party opposition; so far this year, he has barely campaigned. Trump has made more of a showing but never bothered to participate in a debate with his Republican challengers. Many voters, sensing an inevitable repeat of the cast, themes, and arguments of 2020, have bailed. In April, NBC reported that just 64 percent of registered voters polled said they had a high level of interest in the race, down from 77 percent in 2020. General engagement in the election has hit its lowest point in nearly two decades.

Layoffs in public broadcasting: Addressing the triple threat of declining audiences, podcast glut and underwriting challenges
... local advertisers, especially mid-sized businesses, are following the national agencies and shifting more dollars to digital and programmatic platforms, especially the Facebook/Google duopoly.
