If elected, Poilievre said he plans to speed up approvals to build oil refineries, liquefied natural gas plants, nuclear facilities and hydro power. Candidates for new Columbia-Kootenay-Southern Rockies NDP nomination to debate Jan. 11
Two people will tangle for the nomination, with Nelson city councillor and local business owner Keith Page facing Kallee Lins, executive director of the West Kootenay Regional Arts Council. This is a new-for-2025 riding and, after transposing 2021 votes on to these new boundaries, the Conservatives and current MP Rob Morrison are the incumbent. But the NDP did get nearly 37 per cent of the transposed vote and the federal Liberals are non-players here. So this nomination meeting here next week for the NDP will determine the only serious challenge the CPC may face for this seat. (My model has this as a CPC HOLD FWIW)

A rising danger in the Arctic: Microbes unleashed by climate change
One research team described permafrost as “a reservoir of minimally characterized microbial life” that can hold thousands of species, very few of which have been studied. Because there is so little information, most experts caution that trying to assess the microbial risk in and from the Arctic is speculative. But others point out that when data is sparse, informed hypothesizing can lead to an improved strategy for responding to crises now unforeseen.
