Liberals, NDP pass bill to enact two-month GST holiday in House of Commons
The two-month tax break covers dozens of items, including children's clothes and toys, video games and consoles, Christmas trees, restaurant and catered meals, wine, beer, candy and snacks. It would take effect on Dec. 14 and run until Feb. 15, 2025.
Comment dit-on "flip-flop"?
Rules of Thumb for Estimating the Impact of US Tariffs on Canada
In Canada, there is a retaliation threshold that, once crossed, would not require the Bank of Canada to hike rates. If the government keeps its retaliation to below half the tariffs imposed by the U.S., the Bank of Canada would not need to hike rates.
Marc Miller tells Pierre Poilievre to ‘grow a pair’ in heated exchange
Immigration Minister Marc Miller was admonished in the House of Commons during question period Thursday when he told Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to 'grow a pair.'
Eskasoni chief mulls appeal of Cape Breton federal boundaries judicial review
Last Friday, Sydney-Victoria MP Jaime Battiste issued a social-media post explaining the court challenge “was unsuccessful.” He added that despite the decision, he would be running under the Liberal banner in the new Sydney-Glace Bay riding whenever the federal election gets called.
Emily Brown will be the Conservative candidate in the next federal election.
The author of this piece reports that the incumbent in the riding of Burlington, Liberal MP and Government House Leader Karina Gould, "has done a decent job representing Burlington residents". She may indeed have done so but Burlington residents would likely choose the Conservative, Emily Brown, if an election were held in December.
Brown and Gould faced off against each other in the 2021 election and Gould won with an 8.5 per cent margin in 2021. Brown's vote total of 25,742, though, was the most number of votes cast for any second place finisher in the country.
But given current federal polling averages among Ontario voters, my model has Brown beating Gould in the re-match here by more than 15 points.
Brown is a University of Calgary graduate and is currently a professor in the business school at Sheridan College. -DA
McNichol wins Conservative Party nomination in Courtenay-Alberni riding
McNichol beat out two other candidates, Ed Mayne and Joshua Dahling, according to a news release by the Conservative Party. He is a business owner who has had multiple companies in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area during the last 23 years. The incumbent here is New Democrat Gord Johns, first elected in 2015. The Conservatives will challenge for every riding on Vancouver Island including this one and leader Pierre Poilievre has already held several campaign events there. In my model, I have the Conservatives as a 5 point favourite to beat Johns if an election were held this month.

As Australia bans social media for children, Quebec is paying close attention
“We were happy to see this measure approved by the Australian government. It gave us hope for what we proposed,” Aurélie Diep, president of the youth wing of the CAQ, said in an interview. “So for us, it is very positive news.” Quebec Premier François Legault initially ridiculed the idea of a minimum age for social media when it was proposed by the opposition Parti Québécois in May. But he changed his tune after Diep published an open letter calling for a ban on social media accounts for children younger than 16.
Rural Nova Scotia's official opposition: Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin
“The opposition is now smaller and we are definitely going to have a big job to do to hold the government accountable and make sure all the voices of Nova Scotians are being heard,” said Smith-McCrossin.
