Trudeau tells inquiry he has names of Conservatives involved in foreign interference
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has testified at a federal inquiry that he has the names of Conservative parliamentarians who are "engaged in" or are at "high risk" of foreign interference. "I have directed Canada's spy service and others to try and inform the Conservative Party leader to be warned and armed,” Trudeau added, “to be able to make decisions that protect the integrity of that party—of its members—from attempts at foreign activities around foreign interference." David Akin reports on how Trudeau criticized Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre for "choosing to play partisan games with foreign interference" and how Poilievre is responding, as Trudeau faces mounting calls from within the federal Liberal Party to resign.
Trudeau says there’s intelligence Tories ‘engaged or are at high risk’ from foreign interference
In an earlier closed-door interview with the commission’s lawyers, Trudeau talked about the difficulty of the government stepping in when other political parties are under threat from foreign interference. Trudeau pointed to one case, without specifying when, in which his national security and intelligence advisor gave him information about “significant” foreign interference operations related to an opposition party.

Facebook, X and TikTok: How social media algorithms shape speech
“In its early days, social media did function as a kind of digital public sphere, with speech flowing freely,” Kai Riemer and Sandra Peter, professors at the University of Sydney Business School, tell the BBC. However, “algorithms on social media platforms have fundamentally reshaped the nature of free speech, not necessarily by restricting what can be said, but by determining who gets to see what content”, argue Professors Riemer and Peter, whose research looks at why we need to rethink free speech on social media.
The reality of layoffs, beyond the national numbers
While journalists of color make up only 17 percent of the industry, according to Pew Research Center data, they represented 42 percent of the laid-off individuals who responded to the IIJ’s survey. Women hold about 46 percent of journalism jobs, but they made up 68 percent of the survey participants. People aged twenty-six to thirty-five accounted for 41 percent of those responding to the survey, while those aged thirty-six to forty-five made up another 30 percent. (Pew didn’t have comparable data on the age of working journalists.) Finally, people with seven to fifteen years’ experience in journalism made up the largest group of those laid off, by tenure in the industry.
