Lessons from the Frontline: The Burgeoning Security and Economic Race in the Indo-Pacific
International Journal / Yves Tiberghien Canada must be jolted out of its-business-as-usual approach and take a cue from its closest partners in Asia. Saskatchewan NDP promises to hire 100 police officers instead of marshals
Beck told reporters in Regina an NDP government would hire 100 Mounties and municipal police officers if elected on Oct. 28. She said the plan includes $10 million for more boots on the ground and another $10 million for addictions treatment and mental health services. Easterners may miss this but, in the West, provincial New Democratic parties are often law-and-order parties, more so sometimes than their conservative rivals. The Manitoba NDP, most recently, campaigned their way to a majority partly on promises to tighten bail rules and, in doing so, silenced opposition from their conservative critics that the NDP was soft on crime. I watched Stephen Harper discover this when he was a minority PM. He could often find support from Jack Layton's NDP for 'law-and-order' initiatives. Not sure the current federal NDP has the same rep on this as the Layton did or as the NDP parties in Western provinces do.
