A Grave Mistake
Very little federal politics news this morning so, given my interest in Canadian postal history, let me lead with this fresh blog post from Library and Archives Canada about the first spelling mistakesever made on a Canadian stamp. Bilingual postage stamps were not consistently issued until the commemorative series of June 1927, depicting subjects such as the Fathers of Confederation and the then not-yet opened new Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings, with equal prominence given to the French language. As the former federal Translation Service (now the Translation Bureau) provided translations for the text used on stamps, there was usually no problem with the French used. All that was to change with a small error in 1946, producing the first Canadian postage issued with a spelling mistake.

Eby's provincial election campaign pledge comes as hospitals in rural B.C. face periods of emergency closures due primarily to staff shortages. "We need to win the competition for doctors and nurses, both nationally and internationally," Eby said at an outdoor news conference at a municipal park in Vernon on the shores of Lake Okanagan.

Georgia judge rejects lawsuit from GOP officials raising concerns about voting machines
The failed lawsuit, filed by GOP officials in DeKalb County and a familiar cast of pro-Trump lawyers just weeks before early voting begins in Georgia, argued the Dominion voting machines are not in compliance with Georgia law. The officials wanted the secretary of state’s office to make voting records and ballot images available for public inspection within 24 hours of the election.
The campaign’s hottest design trend is stacked, repetitive typography
In a tutorial for how to make stacked, wavy text, Kettl, a German design software provider, said earlier this year that the style is “making a big comeback” thanks in part to its retro-vintage look. A ban made single-use plastic bags history in New York state, which could say something about a newfound nostalgia for repeating “Thank You”-inspired graphics. Warren’s “Tax the Rich” line was first released in 2022, but its style has since appeared in other campaigns too.
Don't Leave Your Fundraising on Autopilot During GOTV
What is one thing we see campaigns forget that costs them victory? Forgetting to add GOTV language to their fundraising appeals. A message from a US Republican campaign operator but this is probably good advice for any of campaigns up and running in BC, SK and NB -- and, as I know some of the folks running those campaigns, I suspect they are doing just this. It's all about voter contact, identifying your vote, and getting your vote. Fundraising is great -- the federal Conservatives dominate here -- but it's all about winning campaigns -- and here, the federal Liberals have won three in a row against their much richer rivals.

The true inside story of Pierre Poilievre’s war with CTV
Stephen Maher: And Canadians should know that all the evidence I have been able to gather so far, through dozens of off the record interviews with people familiar with the details, suggests this is a story of bungling brought on by Bell cost-cutting, not the one Poilievre is peddling, of systematic bias against the Conservatives.

OpenAI’s Canvas can translate code between languages with a click
On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled Canvas, a new interface for ChatGPT designed to enhance collaboration on writing and coding projects. The feature bears similarities to a feature called Artifacts in Anthropic's Claude AI assistant, introduced in June. Canvas displays content in a separate window alongside the AI chat history, allowing users to keep an eye on working document drafts or programming code while collaborating with the AI assistant.
