Joly targets polarization in UN speech, urges liberals to reclaim the word 'freedom'
Joly put women's rights and international law at the centre of her address to the UN General Assembly, in what could be the Trudeau government's last speech at the annual gathering of leaders and ministers in New York. "Some of the loudest voices claiming to speak for freedom are the ones trying to redefine that word for their own purposes," she told the assembly on Monday morning. For those counting, PM Trudeau did not speak to the United Nations General Assembly while he was in NYC last week. He did speak at some some side events. That's why it was the Foreign Affairs Minister, Mélanie Joly, who spoke to the UNGA. In fact, Canadian PMs rarely speak to the UNGA themselves and prefer to dispatch their foreign ministers to deliver Canada's message. Pierre Trudeau , for example, never spoke at the UNGA. Lester Pearson gave six speeches to the UNGA but only gave one as PM. Every other time he spoke to the Assembly he was Louis St Laurent's foreign minister. Justin Trudeau though is tied for the record for speeches by a Canadian PM to the UNGA with three (2016, 2017, 2020.) Who's he tied with? Stephen Harper. (2006, 2010, 2014).
