Trudeau Liberals survive Conservative confidence vote in key test
The Conservatives first attempt to topple Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has failed, but more votes are on the horizon. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s motion which stated the House had no confidence was defeated after the NDP and Bloc Quebcois joined the Liberals in voting against. The vote marked a key test for the Liberals since the NDP ended its supply-and-confidence deal with the government.

“Leave by air now”: Joly warns after 2 Canadians killed in Lebanon
Since October 2023, the federal government has advised Canadians to leave Lebanon while commercial options remain available. On Wednesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly told those who haven't left yet to “leave by air now.” “Just bombardment everywhere. There is no safe zone. More Than Just a Strongman: The Strategic Construction of Viktor Orbán’s Charismatic Authority on Facebook
International Journal of Press/Politics Orbán uses his charismatic authority on Facebook to draw the boundaries of the Hungarian nation, presenting himself as the iconic representation of “Hungarian-ness.” The building blocks of his image are constantly being adapted to the current political situation and to shifts in public opinion. The Orbán image is, thus, a fluid and pragmatic material with only a few core principles and its popularity remains steadfast despite the brand’s contradictions. Understanding the appeal of Orbán’s self-representation may help us better grasp populist regimes’ variation and success worldwide.
To combat voter fraud claims, election officials try radical transparency
The new headquarters illustrates how many officials around the nation are trying to rebuild confidence in elections. Trump’s relentless focus on how votes are cast and counted — along with false and fantastical information floated by him and his prominent supporters — has led to a dramatic increase in the number of people who are observing and scrutinizing the process across the nation. In just a few short years, the election process in many states, especially closely watched battlegrounds, has been transformed.

Platform speech: Journalists and political campaigners reflect on Facebook and disintermediation in three UK general elections
Journalism: Findings demonstrate increasing sophistication in political actors’ use of Facebook as a disintermediation device, bypassing the media to speak directly to voters. However, both sets of interviewees also expressed concern about the effects of removing political gatekeepers on the verification of information and accountability of information providers.
Political Viewpoint Diversity in the News: Market and Ownership Conditions for a Pluralistic Media System
International Journal of Press/Politics: We find that a greater number of papers in a local market does not imply more external diversity in that market. The analysis thus offers some nuance to the notion that ownership form and market pluralism are prerequisites for viewpoint diversity, highlighting instead the importance of scale effects for pluralistic media systems. Interesting counter-factual here
